model files

Can anyone tell me why some .obj and .3ds files load and others wont? Is there a way to fix the ones that wont load? And does anyone know of a site with some good .obj models?Jonathan

Loading these files depends on both the version of the program that was used to create the files and the capabilities of the loader. For instance, if I were to try and load a file created in Lightwave, depending on the version of Lightwave I used to create my model, some aspects of the file would not load because as the Lightwave program gets better, the file format evolves. Not all of these version-specific format changes are going to make it into a loading program.

I suppose there may be a way to "fix" files that won't load, but, again, this would depend on the capabilities of the loading program. More often than not, you're better off writing your own loader. The nice thing about 3D Studio Max files is that Discreet usually maintains a decent file format reference to their files on-line (though don't quote me on it). You'll have to check it out if you are truly interested, and that also goes for finding 3DS files; there are plenty of places on the net that have freely downloadable 3D models.
