INeedHelpPlease,
DON'T CROSS-POST!
Send your dumb-*ss questions to just ONE forum if you must. It's bad enought to have to read this drivel in the New To Java Techology forum without having to see it everywhere else.
Posting the same question to multiple forums will NOT increase your chances of getting a good answer. It'll only *iss people off. Don't do it anymore. It's considered rude. - MOD

wow duffy, lighten up man...it's great that u help out a lot of people on this forum but why the frequent negative and/or insulting comments?...is cross-posting a deadly sin?...how bout a question that is obviously a homework assignment?...this forum is not that big of a deal to come down so hard on someone who may not even know any better, especially if they are new to Java...no one forces you to read or reply to anything on here...

it doesn't *iss me off...why would it?...what is it about seeing a post in 2 different forums that makes u so angry?...seriously, i would like to know...
i respect your right to say what u want to say, so more power to ya, but u should try to give people(especially newbies) a break...they don't intend to *iss u off, that is just ur reaction...

I agree with duffy. If you are new then you should read the guidelines.
> is cross-posting a deadly sin?
No, not necessarily.
But if you need a post to reach people in several forums,
post in one forum and just post a link in the other forums.
[Or if you feel the need to put the entire post in each forum, follow up each post with a post containing a list of links to the other posts.]
> how bout a question that is obviously a homework assignment?
Fine. As long as the poster accepts that
a show of effort is generally required to obtain help. :o

It wastes helpful peoples time.
Someone replies in one thread, someone else answers the exact same questions in another thread a few hours later.
> people(especially newbies)
> don't intend to *iss u off
Not usually, no.
With this one, I'm not entirely sure tho.
Okay, prime21, here's why it's considered rude:
People offering help here are volunteers. If they see a question and offer help on it, they might be wasting their time if, unknown to them, the identical question has been posted elsewhere and already been answered by someone else. They have no way of being flagged that the question is solved and the OP won't be back. So now they've wasted their time giving an answer that is ignored at best.
I get mad because I don't like having my time wasted.
The other maddening thing about it is that most of the people who DO cross-post tend to be as helpless and clueless as the OP of this question. They waste time by not doing any thinking of their own AND repeating foolish questions, in the hope that someone will do the work and thinking for them. THAT really fries me.
I'm not against being ignorant - we all are, just about different things. I still answer CLASSPATH questions, which are as basic as they come. I can even do it and maintain respect for the questioner - IF they respect my time by not cross-posting and actually demonstrate some effort to solve their own problems.
Homework problems are another category. These forums are polluted by students who are just looking to rip off working code that they dupe other people to write for them and pass off as their own. Doesn't that strike you as a high-tech form of cheating? Do you want to have your company hire someone who go through a CS degree like that? I don't.
The OP of this question wins the triple crown of bad posting - cross-posting, lazy, indifferent student. That's why I went off on him.
Thank you for calling me out on it. I don't mind the question. If I was being harsh on someone without cause, I'd accept your correction. But in this case I think the OP needs to change his/her behavior. - MOD
Google "calculator java source".
The first three hits I checked out:
http://www.javasource.150m.com/download.htm
http://javaboutique.internet.com/calculator/
http://javaboutique.internet.com/Calc/
I wonder how many students are going to hand in the same old source...

Also known as leet (elite) speak in online contexts.
Much abused.
Possibly based on "prior art" simplifications, like
"through" -> "thru",
"database" -> "DB",
"dialogue" -> "dialog",
etc.
I'm so used to it I don't notice the more common ones any more.
But, I agree with you, generally it is a bad practice.
The poster saves a few keystrokes (oh, wow) and many readers potentially have to struggle to figure out what the poster intended to say. Overall, time is wasted rather than saved.
