What Java Version

Most probably a very elementary question but I purchased a "Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 In 21 Days" about 1 year ago. I now have the time to go through the book but it mentions JDK 1.2 to use for the book. Obviously, this no longer is the most recent version. Any suggestions as to what version to use or will the 1.4 SDK version work? I am using 2000 server for the OS. Thanks ahead of time.
