2 1/2 D

I am making a game that requires 2 1/2D images, namely, 2D images that look 3D but aren't. Look at Age of Kings artwork, you'll see what I mean.

Anyway, how should I make this kind of art? I was going to draw it out, but I am not sure that is the best idea, it is hard to make it look correct, and I have to do quite a bit of it.

Now, for the most important question, is there software where i can make a 3D wire frame, texture it, rotate the 3d frame, and save it as a 2d image?

Thanks.

you would require professional software to make that kind of thing. like adobe photoshop 7.0.

and for the first question you mean art like age of empires? if your making that rts that you were talking about, you could make the view overhead instead of off to the side.

and you know how you were planning on making spacem2? well why don't you just make spacem2 as the rts, where the nafari have snuck onto your home planet with ahuge task force, and you since you were the saviour last time they attacked are in command of defending the planet.

I do have AdobePhotoshop 7.0.

Well, SpaceM 2 is sorta like that, you'll see. :) I might even make a Spacem 3

Yeah that is. Designing gfx can be difficult. I'll Im really good at is making cool text titles and textures. You'll see my space texture in SpaceWar. BUt designing guys and weapons is real difficult. Here send an email to this guy: bullis2222@yahoo.com. Hes my friend who makes total conversions. He's working on a Duke 3d mod right now. He has stuff to make partial 3d things. Just tell him you know me (Alex P.) and he'll help you out.

My dad is a pro photographer. So I have photoshop 4.0, 5.5, and 6.0. We are suppose to get 7.0 soon.

Cool. Make spaceM 3 a first person star ship shooter ;-)

POV-Ray is a text based freeware 3D raytracer. Also, do you want an isometric tiled game?

Uh, yeah, an explanation - text based means you write a script (like sphere x=10 y=20 z=5 r=5) and you don't know how it looks until you render (AFAIK)

Blender is a right old pain to get into (the ENTIRE ui uses custom widgets, and the help/tutorials are scarce and confusing) but it's pretty cool when you know what you're doing. Also the custom widgets mean you can go around boasting "my 3d tool looks waaaay cooler than yours!"

on second thoughts, looking at the results you get with POV-Ray it looks *way* too advanced for such simple scripting, can anyone give an example script?

It may be easier to actually do it in 3D and restrict it- this works very well for Warcraft 3.

Goto google.com or yahoo.com and search for 3d graphics editor. There are all kinds of free 3d editors out there. And did you email that guys I told you about? He's really good at making 3d art.

Okay, I will get around to that eventually. I'll also try to get you the screenshots in 3 days or so....I am so busy.

Not sure if this is still on topic, but the art work for Age of Kings was done by creating models in 3D Studio Max and then rendering the different frames from the different views to files. This is how most "2.5D" games do it.

but what is dyslestic?

And screen shots would be kool. I'm almost done my Space War game btw. I'll send it over to you when I finish. I've just got to add levels, and game completion, oh and I also gotta make the ships explode... hmm I forgot about that... What prog did u use to make the explosion pics? And what did you just 2 make the sounds?

Someone who reverses letters, or words. ;-)

I made the explosion pics before I had Photoshop, so I had to use MS_PAINT. >:( Something I would not like to do again. ;-) As for the sounds, I recorded noises I made with my mout into my computer, and I used "Sound Recorder" that comes with Winblows 98, and then manipulated them there, by reversing them, shortening them, etc. The BG_MUSIC was made with cakewalk.

The inability to read or write, or at lest that is the literal meaning, normally manifesting its self as "seeing" letters in different orders to which they are written (often reversed and/or getting letters that look the same mixed up, d/b for example, and sometimes, in extreme cases letters appear to move about).

Do do this, you'll have to render 3D images, using something like Bender, Lightwave ( http://www.newtek.com ) or 3DMax. To get anything 1/2 decent you need to have a 3D guy or use stock images (but even then the software is an pain to use ;)

Oh, I thought that was spelt differently.

> Yes, Please do.

You can actually download it from here: http://www.geocities.com/jvp02/SpaceWar1.html. I decided to exclude explosions and sounds because I dont have a mic, and no explosions because it just looks funny when they just pop away. I've also got a really good plan for the second one. Which will be really cool if I do it right.

Hmm (laugh), paint. I haven't used that for years. I do not like it at all. You want to know an interesting way to make patterns? If you make a weird pic like a space field, use the selection tool and select part of it. Then goto edit and define new pattern and then you can use it on text titles like for games. Just apply a pattern overlay. Aw photoshop is heaven when you know how to use it.

Where is pattern overlay? I defined a pattern, but can't find where to use it.

# 28
Or goto Layer > Layer Style > Pattern Overlay and select your custom pattern. You can also Bevel and Emboss things by choosing that option in the same place. You should look up some tutorials for Photoshop. I'll post some of the graphics for my new game. (on my website.)
