Distributing applications

Hi all,

It seems that after I have written my application, I CANNOT just put it up on my website for people to download to their phones. I guess we MUST join the cell phone makers programs such as Motorola/Nextel iDen. This is because the whole application download mechanism is controlled by those manufacturer.

As a result, as a software developer, I will have to join every single phone manufacturer's program out there? This can't be right...Can anyone please comment?

Thanks.

Hello -

I have made the same observation. It looks to me like the phone manufacturers and the service providers intend to control application distribution as a revenue stream.

The MIDlet I wrote was designed to do an online inquiry to the backoffice system that we sell. As you have pointed out, it sounds like I have to convince Motorola and co. to 'sell' my software on their website. Seems like they'd rather see me write a nice Backgammon game that people can download for $12.95 and see the charge on their phone bill.

So, despite the fact that our shop is 100% committed to the Java platform, I will probably be forced to use something like WAP, where I (or my client) can control the distribution of the software.

Sun guys, if we're wrong, PLEASE speak up... I think the telecom industry is in danger of killing this thing before it ever gets out of the gate...

Thanks!

I don't know about Nextel/iden programs or restrictionsbut European operators (GSM/GPRS) allow serving and downloading MIDlets from any web server. This is the right way.--Carlos Sanchez[Intesys]

We would like to invite all mobile games developers to present their games though our servis http://nitrooosoft.com. We are also looking for any available selling channels for our products. We believe that such kind of information may be useful for many developers. Best regards to all of you.

OK so the Motorola iDEN group has locked down their handsets for Nextel and Southern LINC. What problems are you seeing on Cingular, AT&T, T-Mobile, SunCom, or Cincinatti Bell? We have been serving our own J2ME downloads on all those carriers with no issues.
