Can I write J2ME compliant programs for my Compaq Ipaq?

Hi,

Everywhere I look lately I seem to find nothing but support for Palm devices. But as part of my final year project of a BSc. in Software Development I would like to create a wireless client on my Ipaq H36x0 handset. To achieve this I had hoped to use J2ME. This client in turn would be able to connect to several other Enterprise tiers housing middleware such as Servlets, and component oriented middlware such as EJBs.

I am aware of the Jeode VM for the device, but this does not seem to be a free package. Because I'm on a student's budget I would like to attract as little expenses as possible.

The project is still in an elimentary stage, since I don't have to give an outline of the proposed system for another month. So I can of course take a few steps back and have the client interface reside on a desktop workstation, if I am unsuccessful in getting my PDA "up and running".

So what I am asking is if anyone has succeeded in creating J2ME compliant software for their Ipaq or else where could I get information that might benefit me in the long run.

Thanks in advance,

Weston.

according to their website, the ipaq uses jeode. jeode is a java 1.1 java personal edition implementation, and is therefore not MIDP or CLDC compliant (no midlets).j2me support is said to be out Q1 2002, which of course, means q3 2003.-mcclain

The customer support at Sun Developer ask me to post my question here. And I have exactly the same question as Weston. This is also for my Final Year Project. So I can't afford to buy expensive softwares.

Oh Weston I just tried this IBM's virtual machine. It's supposed to be compliant with J2ME I just managed to run a sample HelloWorld program on my iPaq.

its at http://www.embedded.oti.com/

try it see if it helps.

IPAQ supports the Personal Java profile of which there are several different implementations....

Sun's Perosnal Java

Insignia Solutions Jeode

IBM's J9

are a few that I have tested. Of the three, Suns and Jeode seem to work the best, especially for the beginner.

There is a Personal Java forum. You might check there for more information on Personal Java nad IPAQ.
