JVM on Windows XP
Hi,
As a Java programmer I was curious to know which JVM Internet Explorer was trying to download upon accessing a page containing an applet. I have just set up a trail version of the new Windows XP with IE 6.0. I dont have any useful network apps installed yet so I cannot say if this an MS JVM or Sun.
Regardless, my point is when a JVM was shipped with windows most users did not know it was there. Now they get a pop up message saying they need to install a Java Virtual Machine in order to view certain contents of the page.
This is a good time to educate people about Java and ensure they get the best JVMs.
I did a seach on google and download.com for "Java Virtual Machine"
The first link on google was to
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/vmspec/
Not the best link for new commers. It should at least link to the download of the JVM
download.com's top link was for Microsoft Java Virtual Machine 5.00.3802.
Again not the best thing for JVMs and Java.
Sun should address this. Lack of a JVM on Windows XP is free advertisment for Java. It tells the user Java Exists!
Make use of it.

HI!
I am running Windows XP and IE 6.0 and need Virtual Machine to access a chatroom for an on-line class. Microsoft CLAIMS one will be included on the CD version of its XP Service Pack 1 (for the low, low, price of only $9.99 from Microsoft, or coming to convenient retail outlet near you!!!) But they won't say when SP1 will be released. Any suggestions on what we can do in the meantime? Does anyone know of any simple downloads we can use? None of us are JAVA programmers.
Tried it, couldn't get it to work. First, the automatic installer hung, refused to download anything. Canned that and downloaded the JSE manually. Installed it, all went well, but IE6 still won't display any Java pages correctly. One I tried (the money map site, which has a link on the java download page) told me my browser wasn't java enabled. I changed all the settings as they suggested (in fact they were already set correctly) to ensure java WAS enabled, but still no joy. It now tells me "Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException MapLoader.class" Maybe I'll install Opera...

You know, I am having the same problem as owlman....the same "java.class.notfound exception" I have installed HotJava which worked great as a java browser then strangely stopped working...sayin java was not found or disabled.....I have tried numerous times to find this JVM, no success. Microsoft updates keep tellin me this update is no longer available, and still, no success. I have tried all these suggestions, such as: "Select Tools Internet Options
Select the Advanced tab/Locate Microsoft VM/Make sure the Java console enabled and Java logging enabled boxes are checked/Click OK/Restart your computer if you checked the Java console enabled box". There isnt even an option for cookies or java. I have seen that many people have had problems with the windowsXP Pro.and the JVM and I wonder if there IS any solution? ...I'm gettin a headache, bleh.
