Java on Mac OS X

I am trying to run java 2 project on the MAC OS X ...is there any way i can run and compile it on mac os x ....i know about the IDE i can use ie project builder.But is there any way i can run my java project on mac os x like on windows by downloading jdk 1.2 and doing it...

i need to know how to do it on mac without using these IDEs...
