Join a new enterprise Java project.

I am starting a Java/Enterprise/Internet project as a training exercise.

I am an experienced programmer who has learnt Java this year and got Sun Certification. I am now trying to learn databases, server side, EJB etc, and I want to start a project to build some experience. (it would also be nice if we could make some money from it!)

I am looking for other programmers to join me in this. I hope to get another one or two experienced programmers, and a few others. I am studying full time, so can put quite a lot of time into it.

I have a number of ideas for the project, but let's talk about that after we get together.

If you already have a project going, and could use me, then please respond also.

I hope to hear from you.

Hi,I have been looking for a project to be involved in. I'm teaching myself Java and J2EE for a year now but don't have commercial experience. When are you planning to start and what would be the project for? Thanks, moni

I have had 5 expressions of interest in one day, plus spieler's helpful advice, so I am getting a great feeling about this.

Now that I have seen a bit of interest, I'll put up some of my ideas. But PLEASE, my burning desire is to just do something J2EE'ish, and my ideas are just a way to get started, but if YOU have a burning desire to do project XXXX then LET US KNOW. I see this group as being very pro-active and collaborative.

The general idea

I see Java and SQL databases already driving the internet, and I see them getting bigger. There are plenty of people who got in before me, but there are also plenty of people who are not moving there fast enough. Grab this moment in time, by leveraging my strong OO and large project skills, add DBs and internet technology, and open up a whole new world of job opportunities.

The roadmap

Start with a manageable Java/SQL/lnternet project, and add dimensions to it, until we have a full fledged enterprise/internet Java application, or at least the interesting parts of one. Learn whatever technology we need to along the way (eg. we'll have to share code over the internet).

The suggested application path:

0. Basically, we are working on example applications, rather than infrastructure stuff (ie, we are not trying to write a new Apache)

1. I have a book called "e-Commerce Applications Using Oracle 8i and Java from Scratch", which has all the details of building a commercial web site, ending up with basic EJBs to expand the site. Step 1 - we work through that book, adding our own enhancements as ideas come up.

2. Build a Java childcare management system, ie. a system for managing the schedule and bills of a childcare centre. there is already software for doing this of course, but i don't think that any of them are internet enabled. ours will enable customers to view and pay their bills on the internet. useful experience for us. mayber we can get a few bucks from it. we do it in Java and MySQL, because we need to distribute the DB for free.

3. Expand this to a medical practice or hospital management system. scheduling appointments within an intranet and extranet. adding whatever functionality we can think of. i don't really think we can sell this one, because the medical market is already well taken care of, but the experience will be good for us.

4. at any point along the way, if any of us gets a good idea for a money spinner, then we switch to that.

basic technologies to explore

-

I want to go through:

Java

Swing

Applets

Servlets

SQL

Oracle

HTML

Distributed computing

EJB

JDBC

etc, etc.

Teaming

--

We adopt a collaborative approach. I guess I'll be nominal leader (but i am happy to surrender that to anyone who wants it), but we take slices of work according interests, capabilities and available time.

One last thing

-

I would like to do most of it under Linux. If we have a Windows guru who can attend to compatability issues, that would be great.

How does this sound. Please respond either direct to me, or to this board.

*** NO MORE REPLIES PLEASE ***

Please note that I posted this in 2001. A small group of us got together and tried to start the project, but we didn't get far.

From time to time I get emails from people who want to join the project, and I have to inform them that I can't help them.

I am pleased to see others using this thread to find partners in Java projects. I wish you luck, and happy programming!

You might also look for projects to join in http://sourceforge.net. There are thousands of projects there, in various stages of development. Note that there is a section dedicated to enterprise projects.

Best wishes.
